‘Promoting the Development of Outer Space’

Founded by Keith and Carolyn Henson, whom I met, and later merged with the National Space Society (sic)

In 1982, I walked in to the office expecting grey-haired scientists. I found wonderful hippies and a board of directors made of the stars themselves - from NASA to German Rocket Scientists. The real ones, whose names you should know....

Originating at the NASA/Ames study of 1976 on free-space habitats as a natural outgrowth of Dr. Gerard K. O’Neil,  work for his physics instruction classes  at Princeton. The students’ unlimited enthusiasm in pursuing technical solutions to the problem of living in huge rotating habitats located at the Lagrange libration points in any two-body system drove a vision of unlimited resources available of the top of the gravity wells – solar orbit.

Forget planets - why climb up and down an energy gradient equivalent to a four-thousand mile cliff?

The Moon is half-way to any other point in the solar system, energy-wise.

The recent launch of the LUCY mission will arrive at a Jupiter/Sun libration point.

In addition to serving as vice-president of the local chapter, I began part-time office work at the International Headquarters, located in the desert of southern Arizona, Earth.

The final meeting of the L-5 society was to be held aboard the first space colony.
